Agents Against Agency is a collection of sound artworks exploring the power of emergent systems and human group improvisation. Each of the nine commissioned artists were asked to explore a human-nature interaction in which human agency is subsumed into a natural system. The artists came back with work exploring emergence and improvisation, exposing us to dynamic and spontaneous forms of beauty, in dialog with nature.

"Brick­work" (2010) 13'44" by 12 dog cy­cle + Ros­alind Hall. The Brunswick Brick­works, in Mel­bourne's in­ner-north­ern sub­urbs, was in op­er­a­tion from 1884 to 1993. Half the site has been re­de­vel­oped in­to mod­ern apart­ments with on­ly a sin­gle brick chim­ney pre­served to ful­fill her­itage-list­ing re­quire­ments. The oth­er half, where the film­ing took place, awaits a sim­i­lar re­de­vel­op­ment. Armed with three acous­tic in­stru­ments – ac­cor­dion, voice and sax­o­phone, we ar­rived be­fore the sun and traf­fic, to spend the morn­ing play­ing through­out the kiln as it slow­ly filled with light. We made so­lo, duo and trio group­ings, giv­ing us space to lis­ten to and em­brace the en­er­gy in the Brick­works.
